COWLEY, Sir Arthur Ernest (1861-1931)
Bodleian Library 1896-1931 (CL 1919)
He was a Semitic scholar from early days, notably in Hebrew, Aramaic and Hittite. His period as Bodley's Librarian was difficult and controversial due to campaigns for easier access and library extension; his success was reflected by the extension of his service for five years beyond normal retiring age.
